Since its designation by the United Nations in 2005, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed each year on January 27th. Falling on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp on January 27, 1945, International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorates the genocide perpetrated by the Nazi regime that killed six million Jews and eleven million others. The goal is twofold: memorializing the victims of the Holocaust and educating others about it, to prevent future genocides.

(Note, Yom Hashoah, the Holocaust remembrance holiday on the Jewish calendar, falls each year on the 27th of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. This commemorates the date of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943. Yom Hashoah 2021 will fall on Friday, April 9th.)
