March is Women's History Month, a time to celebrate women's achievements and lasting contributions throughout history. In the Jewish tradition, women have always been central figures—leaders, educators, philanthropists, and changemakers—who have played a vital role in sustaining and strengthening Jewish life. From the wisdom of matriarchs to the resilience of modern-day leaders, Jewish women have continuously shaped history through their actions and unwavering commitment to community.
One way that legacy lives on today is through the Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE), where women in Tidewater secure the future of Jewish life with financial resources. LOJE donors are women who have endowed their annual campaign gifts, ensuring their generosity continues annually in perpetuity. As a symbol of their lasting commitment, they wear the Or L’Atid (Light Unto the Future) flame on their Lion of Judah pins—an emblem of their dedication to sustaining Jewish life.
Women like Barbara Dudley exemplify this spirit of giving, turning their values into a legacy that will continue to support the Jewish community for years to come. Barbara's journey through love and loss and her unwavering dedication to the Jewish future led her to establish a LOJE endowment, ensuring that her impact will be felt for generations.
Similarly, Ellen Hundley's commitment to philanthropy reflects Jewish women's profound and lasting influence in shaping the future of Tidewater's Jewish community.
As Women’s History Month comes to a close, Tidewater Jewish Foundation proudly celebrates the women who are writing the next chapter of Jewish history. Their names are an example of the power of Jewish women—past, present, and future—to sustain and uplift their communities.
